Table Top Sale September 2010works

The club held a Table Top sale at the Hornsea Floral Hall on 5th September 2010. The sale successfully raised more than £100 from items sold and adding to funds available for Rotary good works. Big thanks go out to all members who were there in force and who did such a good job in leafleting and promoting other events as well as helping to man the two Tables we were selling from.

There was a wide range of good quality items and there were some first class bargains to be had by all, be it a book, a map, cooking pot or a mirror. The few remaining unsold items at the end of the day have been placed into store ready for the next event.

Another Day’s Work August 2010
The Yorkshire and East Riding Accident and Emergency Service

crash pic
Dr Mc Donald, a member of the Hornsea and East Riding Rotary Club, entertained his fellow members with a fascinating talk on the history of the service locally.
In 1967 Dr Ken Easton, a General Practitioner in Northallerton, was called to an accident on the A1. He felt very unable to help because of a lack of special equipment over and above that carried by the ambulance service. He set up an Emergency Call Service with several colleagues in the North Yorkshire region and the next year, in 1968, several General Practitioners in the East Yorkshire area set up the Yorkshire and East Riding Accident and Emergency Service (YERVAES). This service is better known locally as the “Flying Doctor Service”, although the doctors do not actually “fly”.
The British Association of Emergency Care Schemes was formed in 1979 and since
milar schemes to that in East Yorkshire were linked throughout England and better training became the norm.
Until Ambulance Paramedics were trained in 1984 some 30 doctors in the area attended a multitude of emergencies, mainly road traffic accidents, providing essential medical care and saving lives.
Now the service is linked across boundaries with Lincolnshire and West Yorkshire and, on occasions, the doctors do fly. Communication is much better and the doctors are extremely well equipped and far better trained.
All these services remain charities with no government funding, despite being an “essential service”. Any member of the general public wishing to donate to the local service can do so by contacting:

The Hog Roast 18th July 2010

What a fabulous day! Supporters of the Rotary Club of Hornsea and East Riding who turned up to Densholme Farm on Sunday afternoon had a “crackling good time”.dogcheque
The weather was perfect; the barn was an ideal setting, the food was excellent and the dogs from Canine Partners were fantastic.
Malcolm Wells, from Canine Partners, gave a really humerous insight into the training regime for the dogs who then demonstrated their skills to the assembled audience.
Mums and Dads cried and children were repeatedly heard  to say “please Mum” as the dogs strutted their stuff. The arrival of the puppy puppycompletely broke down all barriers and the afternoon ended perfectly as families clambered to have their photographs taken with the dogs.
The Rotary Club were delighted to be able to present Canine Partners(picture of hard working dog taking the cheque) with a cheque for £1700 which will provide the funds to pay for 3 more dogs for the Charity, which so helps disabled people go about their everyday lives.
Well done to everyone concerned. If anyone wishes to donate to the Charity please click onto their website www.caninepartners.co.uk and all will be revealed.

Carnival Time July 2010

For yet another year the Rotary Club of Hornsea and East Riding were delighted to support the Hornsea Carnival.
Despite some rather inclement weather spirits were not dampened and those volunteers from the Club who gave up their time were delighted to raise some very welcome funds for the Club’s General Account.
Principal activity was a Football Shoot stand and many stepped up to demonstrate their prowess with a football. Rotary members were looking for some potential England players and perhaps they spotted one or two.
We were delighted to be next to the boys who are now on their way to Warsaw, raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care, and now keen to support us in our bid to raise lots of money for Marie Curie from the One Third Marathon in April 2011. They want 50 stalwarts to run with them over the nine mile course. Any takers leave a message on their website  www.3000in30.co.uk .

The Exuberance (or is it madness!) of Youth 12th July 2010

On Sunday 18th July three young men from the Hornsea area will set off to cycle 3000 kilometres to Warsaw in Poland to raise money for the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity.3000in30 pic
You have to admire their enthusiasm but marvel at the task ahead. With very little experience of a life on the saddle, Nick Joel and Steve will set off from the Humber Bridge car park, cross the North Sea courtesy of the generosity of P&O Ferries, and then tackle the 3000 Kilometres to Warsaw via Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Italy, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland.
They freely admit that their training has been slightly superficial with rides from Wetwang to Beverley and Driffield to York, presumably to get some experience of hills. Does this compare to the Stelvio Pass in the Austrian Alps, we have to ask!
Last night they came to the Rotary Club of Hornsea and East Riding to seek our support and tell us about the task ahead. They did not get many volunteers to go with them but we wish them luck. Their Charity certainly deserves them and their endeavours.

Please support their charity in anyway you can at their web site www.3000in30.co.uk and follow their progress with the regular posting to the site tthat they plan whilst cycling their way accross Europe..

President's Night - June 2010

Hornsea East Riding Rotary Club members joined their President John Gosnold for an end of year's celebration of his Office prior to him passing the reins to Keith Twigg.

A great night was had by all at the Stags Head Inn at Lelley where we enjoyed good food, good company and good entertainment. The lovely summer evening got off to a fitting start wtih early evening drinks at Paul and Heathers.

Richard sang 'His Old is Mans' a Dustman and the Sergeant at Arms was tempted to get out his fines book but was shamed into giving a good impression of being human and not fining anyone.

Thanks John for organizing such a good night.

Spring Concert in the Minster - May 2010

An audience of around 300 attended an outstanding concert at Beverley Minster on Friday 7th May in support of the Rotary District 1270 Disability Games which are to be held at Hymers College in Hull in 2011 and 2012.

The concert, organised by the Rotary Club of Hornsea and the East Riding, featured international artistes Francesco Attesti (Piano) and Russian-born Victoria Rastorgueva (Soprano) both living in Italy.   Francesco and Victoria provided a wonderful evening of music from classical composers such asPuccini, Chopin, Liszt and Rachmaninov.  Music from Richard Quick, Tom Bertolotti and Jeff Wu from Hymers College entertained the audience as they came into the Minster and during the interval.

The evening raised around £1000 towards the Disability Games, which are organised for around 400 young and older disabled people with events including archery, table tennis, rifle shooting and weight lifting.

Densholm Farm Open Day is a winner

6th June 210

Over 450 people attended Denys Fells farm open day. Visitors got to see a organic farm at first hand and were taken on coach tours of farm and Rotarian Denys Fell gave personal guided tours across fields and explained how the farm worked and its principal crops and seasons. Rotarian Alison Clark greeted and assisted.

The NHS bus was on hand at the farmstead with the coastal health improvement team encouraging visitors towards a healthy lifestyle. East Yorkshire Council play rangers led the fun events with mini-olympics, straw bale play and face painting. The farm team won the tug of war competition but don't tell anyone that they had to 'borrow' a few of the opposition to do so! Spring Gardens from Sigglesthorne kindly donated seeds for children to plant.

George & Moo the pigs were very happy to see so many visitors as was Dolly the sheep and her lambs. The chickens took it all in their stride.

Rotarian Denys Fell invited to Highgrove to meet Prince Charles (April 26, 2010).

Denys (centre)reports that it was a great day saying "I was delighted to accept an invitation from His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, to a reception for The National Care Farming Initiative at Highgrove on Monday, April 26, 2010".
After a conducted tour of the excellent gardens, Prince Charles joined the group for dinner. I thanked him for his kind invitation and he spoke passionately about care farms and caring for the planet. We shared these and other interests, not least of which was organic farming. I also had the opportunity to talk with other leaders of the farming community, including Sir Don Curry who has played a big part in farming’s structure. It was a great day which expanded my horizons and the weather was also very kind.

Now we can go to Denys's and see for ourselves what he is doing on on his farm at Denholme Farm here.

Winter Walk Feb 2010walkers

Rotarians and friends undertake a Winter Walk around the Hornsea Country Side. Over 70 walkers set out on a 8 mile walk around the Hornsea Mere and out to Great Hatfield. The walk was in aid of Canine Partners - Training Assistance Dogs for people with disabilities.

Densholm Farm was a welcome stop for a hot lunch before pressing on back into Hornsea along the old railway track. The moring was good walking weather but the afternoon rain made the return walk a little more challenging.

The event raised a goodly sum for the charity and all enjoyed the challenge.

Pacey Rotarian

subeauRotarian Paul Train has a passion for motor rally and at the weekends navigates for Dave Watkins who runs both a Subaru and a vintage Ford Escort in the Cyclone Mobility Rally Team banner.

For the technically obsessed- the Subaru is a 1998CC Subaru Impreza group A year 1993 and the Ford Escort MkII RS1800 Cossack vintage of the model that won the 1976 RAC Rally.

Because Dave is wheelchair bound the cars are adapted with Hand controls. Bar for brake, accelerator ring on steering wheel and clutch paddle on the back of gear stick.

escortThey were rallying the Subaru on the weekend 15th/16th May 2010 and achieved 10th overall and 9th in class.

Over the winter, they were Rallying locally at Oliver’s Mount Scarborough mount in the Roger Clark Rally where also, they put up a good show in the Escort and clocked some reasonable times. A few fellow Rotarians went to cheer him on but he was zipping by and never saw them.

We are all a bit envious Paul and amazed at Dave's skills. Why did my Escort never go so quick? If you need a reserve driver and navigator Gerry Woolfenden and Ron Hughes could be just your men.

Rotary help couple on Fundraising Hitch! - March 2010

Emma Sienko (19) and Tom Everard (23) have raided over £1500 in support of the Link Community Development with a little help from Rotary Club of Hornsea and East Riding.
Emma and Tom travelled to Morocco and back on a sponsored hitch. They came back to the club to tell us all about their travels and how they had seemingly zigged zagged across Europe.

Rotary clubs help was though running a Race Night at a the Victoria Hotel. The money raised helped them to get off on their sponsored hitch with a good float and enabled them to raise almost double their planned target.

Nice to see effective self motivated you people making such contributions and managing to enjoy themselves too. Thanks for allowing us to help you both. Excellent
