Help for Heroes - September 2011

ln Andrew
The evening of Saturday 17th September saw the Hornsea and East Riding Rotary Club raise the roof of the Hornsea Floral Hall with the help of the Humberside Police Brass Band and over 250 members of the public who came along to raise their flags and sing along to their old favourites. For three years now the Club has held their traditional “Last Night of the Proms” concert and it is clearly firmly entrenched as part of the Hornsea Calendar.
This year we broke all records and helped celebrate not only the 150th Anniversary of the Police Band but raised a record sum of over £1800 which will enable us to send a healthy donation to Help for Heroes and boost our funds for other deserving local charities.

Perhaps the highlights of the evening were our President, Andrew Eastwood, dressed up as a Union Jack presenting a photo of last year’s event to our oldest attendee, Mrs Muriel Turnbull, and the Pipe Major stirring us all up with his rendition of Highland Cathedral. The Humberside Police Band was, as ever, fantastic.
We would like to say a healthy and heartfelt “Thank You” to all who helped make this evening a huge success and promise that we, along with the Police Band, will be back next year.
We invite you to visit our website and look at the pictures and see if you can see anyone enjoying themselves. I can !!!

A special feature was a Marquee Display of Shelter Boxes allowing people to see the product at first hand and how it is used in international disaster support. Shelter Box is an International Disaster Relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disasters worldwide.

The club also ran its famous 'football game' of kicking the ball through the hole to win £5. Rotarian Stewart showed how easily the ball goes through. Look out for this game at our next event .

Thanks to all members and everyone who assisted us on the day and for all the support we received from generous public donations .

Visitor from Grenada/Grimsby – June 2011

Last Monday night (11th July 2011) the speaker was billed as “different”. Henry Bowen told how he made the journey between his andrewnative Grenada, a tropical spice island that is part of the Windward Isles off the Venezuelan coast. Born in 1943 into a family of 15 he caught the contagion of the age. Britain needed workers to rebuild its industry and the Colonies had eager volunteers.guest

As a teenager when he decided to follow in his big brother’s footsteps and come to England and get an apprenticeship. Some how he managed to wangle a passage on a banana boat and landed in South Wales. This was a time of fun and hard work. Not only did he learn his trade, but also joined his brother’s steel band, said to be one of the best, and this gained him access to prestigious events.

Things moved on; Henry ends up in Great Grimsby and this tall elegant black man charms the lovely Linda (and her mum) the result being one of the century’s most successful marriages. Then there are long years of working away during which time the steel drums are forgotten and left to rust. However in later years Henry moved on in his professional life and became a much sought after Inspection Engineer and this is where he became a longstanding friend of a Hornsea Rotarian.

Encouraged into a role of public speaking, Henry found his true vocation. After retiring from full time work he had more time to spend re-polishing his drums and perfecting his technique. The attached clip demonstrates his ability.

Henry kept his listeners “spell bound” on Monday when he explained the politics of steel bands he knew in his youth. Interspersed were snippets from his formative years “all wrapped up” with several tunes on his antique steel drums. The Meeting consensus was that this device, in his capable hands, can equally match the melody from more conventional musical instruments.

Note to other Rotary Clubs in the District.

Author Robert Edric visits the Club – June 2011

Robert Edric

edricThe author Robert Edric spent an evening with the club recounting his life as an internationally renowned author who has lived in Hornsea for over 20 years. His real name is Gary Armitage , he is married to a teacher at the town's High School and he is proud to say that locally he is known as Mrs Armitage's husband. Despite having 20 books published and the possibility of a film deal Robert/Gary has his feet firmly on the ground and is modest and self deprecating. He puts this down to his upbringing in Sheffield, his university days in Hull and his life in Hornsea.
The club had a wonderful hour  as he told of his experiences in the literary world. The talk was very educational but best of all very amusing and laughter filled the room.

The walk was nine miles in total undertaken in lovely winter sunshine and across the gentle surrounding wonderful  country side. Walkers were home by 3pm, happily tired and looking forward to the next walk.

Last Night of The Proms at The Floral Hall.montage

September 2010

What a night it was !!!!.   Record tickets sales !!!. 'House Full'  Notices !!!.

The 15th Annual Hornsea Last Night of the Proms at the Floral Hall on Saturday 18th September proved to be the best yet. At one stage it seemed that we would have to erect  giant screens on the beach and arrange a  video link. There wasn't a spare seat in the hall as the 'Promenaders' were regally entertained by the Humberside Police Concert Band led by Brent Read who's solo rendition of 'Summertime' was one of the highlights of the night.

The band improve year on year and this year's programme saw them at their very best. Showtunes from Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and My Fair Lady were interspered with works by Rossini and Barsotti . The main charity of the night was Help for Heroes and the band acknowledged this fact with renditions of  Cockleshell Heroes and Where Eagles Dare. The finale which included Sea Shanties, Jerusalem and  Land of Hope and Glory brought everyone to their feet, waving flags and singing at the top of their collective voices.

Present in the audience were many people who have attended every Hornsea Prom' including the founder Jean Robinson who with husband Angus was celebrating their 45th Wedding Anniversary and 93 years old Maude Turnbull who promised to be back next year.

The club would like to thank the band, the wonderful Hornsea Air Cadets who manned the car park and provided an immaculate military presence and most of all the people who supported us and our chosen charity by buying  a ticket and joining us on this very special night.

Make an entry in your diary for 17th September 2011 when we will do it all again. Tickets will be available direct from this site for the very first time.

Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2009/2010

Hull ClipperIan Jarvis and John Gosnold from the Rotary Club of Hornsea and East Riding were proud to represent the Club at a meeting of the Holderness Club on Monday 4th September to listen to the young Ambassadors who represented Hull on the Clipper Round the World Race 2009/2010.
15 young people, supported by the Rotary Clubs on the North Bank of the Humber, left Hull on September 13th 2009 to sail around the world.  From Hull to La Rochelle, to Rio de Janeiro and on to Cape Town; then to Western Australia and on to Qingdao in China; to San Francisco. Jamaica and New York; to Sidney in Canada, Cork in Ireland and Ijmuiden in the Netherlands before returning to Hull, they sailed.
All of them described it as a life changing experience, which it clearly was. They learned to work as a team, to put up with highly dangerous and uncomfortable situations, to tolerate other young people in extremely cramped conditions whilst facing mountainous seas and beautiful scenery.

They realised just how much Rotary has helped change their lives and intend to set up a Rotaract Club in Hull, which would be a fitting reward for the hard work put in to the adventure by a large number of Rotarians in the Hull area.
