Hornsea Christmas Lights Night 2012

Yet again the Rotary Club of Hornsea and East Riding Actively supported the Hornsea Chamber of Trade, when they switched on the Christmas Lights for 2012.

Linking up with Marie Curie Cancer Care, who provided a magnificent trailer barrel organ sponsored by Hornsea Freeeport, we were able to bring Newbegin to life!

Those Rotarians who braved the freezing conditions all agreed that this was the best one yet. The sight of every passer-by smiling and breaking into dance at the sound of the Christmas music emanating from the whirlitzer was heart warming to say the least.

The people of Hornsea were fantastic in their generosity and we raised over £215 for Marie Curie. Perhaps even more heart warming was to see the young teenagers from the local school community joining in with the dancing and singing along with the carols. Young people............... you were just fantastic and a credit to your age group Photos: Courtesy of "The Holderness Gazette"

Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2012
Poppy2012

Once again the Rotary Club of Hornsea has come to the aid of the local British Legion Poppy Appeal, distributing over 150 boxes locally and collecting over £10,000.

Three years ago the Hornsea and District Appeal almost became defunct due to the illness of a long standing organiser for the Appeal. The Hornsea Rotary Club, we think the only Rotary Club in the country to take such action, sprang into action and took over the job of distribution and collection.

We are also very active in helping marshalling for the Remembrance Service parade in the town, a function that allows the Club a great deal of publicity but, more importantly, involves us with a tremendously important part of the local town activities.

As a Club, we consider this alliance to be of considerable importance and hope that it will grow and become a permanent part of our Rotary Calendar for the year. Photos: Courtesy of "The Holderness Gazette"

Hornsea and East Riding Rotary Club support Local Branch of CRY
(Cardiac Risk in the Young)

Almost one year following the sad death of a local schoolboy, Josh Fell, from the Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome, the Rotary Club was delighted to present a cheque for £2000 to his parents Donna and Richard Fell.

They attended a meeting of the Club, along with Josh’s sister, Jasmine, on Monday 28th May to receive the cheque which goes a long way to helping them reach their fund raising target for the year

.
Also attending the Club was Richard Beaumont, General Manager of the Hull Nuffield Health and Well-being Club, who sponsored the Team Race Section of the Hornsea 1/3rd Marathon 2012. The winning team, 10 Coffee Shop in the Market Place in Hornsea, received £500 which they donated to the local branch of CRY in memory of Josh.

The remaining £1500 was raised by the Club holding their 60’s Night Concert in the Floral Hall, Hornsea, in March of this year.

The Rotary Club of Hornsea and East Riding are delighted to help local organisations who work tirelessly to raise money for their own Charities, as well as National and International causes who require support for their efforts. Over the 2011/2012 year the Club is proud to have raised over £200

Hornsea and East Riding Rotary Club 1/3rd Marathon 2012
The best yet  .................... it is official!

Over the last five years the Hornsea Rotary 1/3rd marathon has seen an increase in the number of entrants and this year the number of entrants was our best yet, with over 360 runners from all over Yorkshire and Lincolnshire completing the 8.7 miles of lanes around north Holderness. The number was enhanced by the introduction of a Team Race for non-club runners, with six teams competing against each other for the Nuffield Health sponsored £500 prize.
The time attained by the winner, Carl Ryde, from the Doncaster Athletic Club was also the best yet. He ran the 1/3rd in 45 minutes 34 seconds. What a run from the new National Champion!
Another best yet was the weather. Sandwiched between two wintery days, yet again the sun shone as it has done every race day for the last five years.
Densholme Farm was impeccable and a magnificent centre from which to start and finish the race. Year on year there is more for families of runners to do whilst their loved ones inflict the pain of running for Charity on themselves. Thank you Denys ........... it is beautiful.
The final “best yet” has to be the amount of money raised for our Charity, Marie Curie Cancer Care. The generosity of our sponsors, Neil Hudgell Law, Nuffield Health and Welfare, Hornsea Freeport, Seven Seas Healthcare, Phil Bingham Associates and Seaton Garage and Engineering Company, is unsurpassed. Once again ....... “thank you”.
Yes, we will do it again next year. The exact date will be announced as soon as the date for the London Marathon 2013 is made public.
If you want to see pictures of the race just click on the official photographer’s website: http://tif.am/UK3415202C97698602/Rotary

Monies raised from the sale of any photographs on this site will be donated to Marie Curie Cancer Care. Thank you, Sarah, for your hard work and generosity.
A final “thank you” must go to the local residents of Great Hatfield and Sigglesthorne, whose peaceful Sunday we once again disturbed. We hope you will tolerate us again next year.

Hornsea County Primary School Rock Challengeschool

The Rotary Club of Hornsea and East Riding were delighted to help out our local youngsters when they asked for assistance in funding their bid to win Rock Challenge.

Our Club consider funding local charities to be as important as our National and International projects. We are a community group and hold our Community commitment in high regard. Helping local youngsters, who never cease to amaze us with their talents, is especially satisfying. Well done Hornsea County Primary who were very rapid in showing their appreciation for our efforts of help.

The Annual Hornsea Hike helps our local Charities

On Sunday 8th January over 50 intrepid walkers set off from Hornsea Mereside to help raise funds for the local charities supported by the Rotary Club of Hornsea and East Riding.hike pic
The weather was beautiful and the spirits high as we set off, following a route along the road to Rolston and the along “Mucky Lane” to the Hull road close to the Water Tower. The journey then became a little more difficult to follow and one or two of us took a rather circuitous route around the local fields, but did manage to make lunch at Great Hatfield on time.
Densholme Farm proved once again to be a great venue for lunch and the traditional “bacon butties” were gratefully received and enjoyably washed down with a wonderful hot cup of tea.
The journey back top Hornsea along the old railway line  was much easier to follow and everyone arrived back in town fit and well.
We raised over £200 on the day and would like to thank all those non-Rotarians who came along to support us on the day.

Father Christmas at Hornsea Freeport: December 2011xmas pix

Our association with Hornsea Freeport in December 2011 was a huge success. After the bad weather of 2010, when few people could brave the elements to come and see Santa, children in their hoards came along to the Grotto this year to help us raise money for our Charities. For the three weekends in December prior to Christmas and for three days in Christmas week Rotarians staffed the Grotto and helped continue the magic of Christmas for children coming from as far afield as Selby, Driffield, Bridlington, Hull and Withernsea.

We raised over £700 which will go to help many of our local organisations which we help over the year. Many thanks to Hornsea Freeport for their support and assistance.

The Hornsea and East Riding Rotary Club help our Local Girls football

December 2011

Following an imaginative presentation to the Hornsea and East Riding Rotary Club by Mark Hobson from the Hornsea Sporting FC the Club was so impressed that they contributed £300 to help buy training tops for the girls.football logoThe Hornsea Sporting FC started its life in 2005 when Mark Hobson, a well known local rugby scrum half, approached our local schools in an effort to gain coaching for his son who had a desire to play football. He was surprised by how many other boys and girls also wanted to join in, and several mixed teams were set up. A problem for the girls arose when, due to Football Association rules, girls had to play separately.
An Under 11 team exclusively for girls was then set up and the Sporting FC has since gone from strength to strength using pitches at both Aldbrough and Hornsea schools. They now boast a total of 5 boys’ teams, 5 girls’ teams and 1 ladies teams.
The girls are proud to wear the tops provided by Hornsea Rotary and, in order to raise more funds, intend to join with the Club at our swimathon to be held at the Hornsea Leisure Centre in March 2012.
